Orphanage moving

THE municipal Civil Affairs Department has announced that Zhuhai Orphanage in Xiangzhou is to relocate to the Social Welfare Centre Building in Qianshan by October 1.
Covering 10,000sqm with floor space of 13,000sqm, the building affords lodging, service and administration, education, entertainment and logistics, medical and rehabilitation areas with tracks for the sight-challenged on each floor. The medical area, housing 300 beds, provides nursing, medical rehabilitation, psychological therapy and listening training for disabled orphans. In addition, nearly 3 million yuan ($437,000) has been spent installing safety monitoring and service facilities.
Founded in 1985, the current orphanage covers 2,660sqm with floor space of 1,779sqm. With an increase in the number of orphans adopted, problems in management, playground, classroom and lodging abound. Thus, 35 million yuan ($5.10 million) of the commonweal fund welfare lottery was earmarked for the new building last year, the department noted.
Moreover, a three-year expansion of town-level social welfare centres is under way with focus on safety devices. Living conditions, education, rehabilitation and medical facilities are also being upgraded, according to the department.
