I'm new in town and wish to buy a bike, probably a mountain bike. Can anyone suggest the best place to get one? I'm not after start of the art or anything, just enough to explore the city ans when motivated to get me to work!

There is a shop near our house in Jida, bus stop Jiao Han Da Sha (Bank of Communications, but on the other side of the road). You can take bus 12 or 3 going towards the seaside. They sell tons of different bikes. Looks like prices vary from less than 150RMB per bike and up. You have to go see in person. And I am sure they can add some stuff if you want.

You can buy a Trek 540 that is a wonderful "urban assault" utilitarian bike for around 5,000 RMB. You can also buy real cheap stuff for less than a thousand. There is a wonderful bike shop in ZH but hard to find because it is so tucked away. It is the place where bike enthusiast go to buy. If you are looking an above average bike than email privately and I will show you how to get there.

these prices seems pretty hight for something that will be stolen later.. :-)
Personaly I spend around 250/300 RMB in any small bike shop, there are lots of them. This includes all accessories and later maintenance...

Realistically, you can not

Realistically, you can not even buy a good pair of riding pants for less than 300 RMB, that is not to say you can't buy a cheap bike in China for 250RMB. A European bike buddy just bought a couple of Campi parts and it cost him 11,000 RMB in ZH and he think it is worth it, of course he almost sleeps with his bike.

LOL ! Sure that he will

LOL ! Sure that he will have to be cautious.
It also depends on the kind of use you need. I just like to ride around and take nice shots. so I don't need a good bike. But it is the 3rd one in 1 and half year; The first one was nice and a bit expensive and got stolen after 1 month (near Vanguard), the second was not as nice and got stolen after 6 month (near the Macau border) this one is just ordinary bike and no one seems to want it !

My wife and I were inside a large Bank of China in Jida and both of our bikes were locked together (2 locks) right outside main door. I turned my head for 5 minutes and when we went outside...her foldup was gone and mine left. They took the locks. Her bike was 1 week old . So we asked outdoor restaurant guests etc..if they saw anything...nothing. Its called selective stealing.
So then when we replaced them...I bought 1 mtr of stainless chain and best lock I could find...it worked..
good luck...buy a cheapee they are ok..250 yuan for normal mountain bike...bike shop one road over from A Best

It is that intimate dialog

It is that intimate dialog men often have with his toy, i mean machine. Many riders think a bicycle is the most beautiful and perfect machine ever invented by men.

I must have lost 5 or 6 bikes back in San Francisco, and one was taken from inside my locked garage. Since 1999 I have been riding and traveling in China from Shenzhen to Szechuan, and I must have put on 4 to 5 thousand miles on my bikes and I have yet to loose one. Of course I use really good locks and very conscious of where I leave my bikes. Karma, i suppose.
