Work Visa

Tags:

Hey everyone,

My name is Ted, I'm a 29 y/o American man and I am thinking of coming to teach English in Zhuhai next year. I am wondering, how difficult is it to get a work visa these days? Once I line up work will I be able to get a visa in a reasonable period of time?

Thanks,
Ted

@Ted, Perhaps the best

@Ted,

Perhaps the best advice I can give you is to join www.eslcafe.com and read as much as you can stomach of the 2 China-related forums in the "international job forums". There is a wealth of good information there, especially in the "stickies".

Up until now, I've had more problems in my life than a cub scout at the Neverland Ranch...

Do you have ALL the

Do you have ALL the qualifications necessary for an English teaching job - ie BOTH degree AND TEFL cert? Visas are damm difficult to get at present. School begins next week and many schools are going to be short of teachers because of the clamp down on visas. Hopefully things will improve now the Olympics are over. If you mean 2009 then things should be better.

I have seen on other forums

I have seen on other forums that they are soon to introduce the rquirement that you have a statement from your "home" police that you have no criminal ecord. Havent hear of a date of affect yet though.
Also it looks like we are getting a new Entry/Exit form in October perhaps along the lines of the HK one (carboned)

This is a good reading for you in regard of how visa situation has been changing.
But then again - once you apply for a job, you have to ask a lot of questions from your potential employer.
Re: criminal record. So far it has only been asked in Inner Mongolia. Nothing of such in Guangdong.

In my opininon, companies

In my opininon, companies should be responsible for securing their foreign employees work visas. I'd be interested to be enlightened about what the situation is for english teachers as I get the impression this is not the case.

If indeed some schools leave their foreign teachers to their own, the process is pretty simple (info on this on another thread)but I can imagine this is surely one of the reasons Zhuhai will be short of valuable teaching staff.

If I remember correctly, my friend at UIC mentioned the school processed it for her.

Any reputable school in

Any reputable school in Zhuhai, or any other city in China for that matter, will provide all of the necessary paperwork and assistance with the Labor Department and the PSB to get their teachers properly documented and “legal”. If any school refuses to do that, and insists that someone come here and work on a tourist visa, or suggests that someone work for them while on a work/residence visa that has been provided by another employer, SHOULD BE AVOIDED LIKE THE PLAGUE!

What some people still do not seem to understand is that a foreigner’s work permit allows them to work ONLY for the school/company that sponsored them. That is the law! If a foreigner decides to get outside of that law, they are acting outside the law, and are subject to whatever retribution the government wants to bring down upon them.

Enough said?
